- DOJ Official Fired Over Refusal to Reinstate Mel Gibson’s Gun Rights, Elizabeth G Oyer resisted adding Mel Gibson’s name to a list of candidates eligible for restored firearm rights.
- Officials cited Mel Gibson’s Trump ties and Hollywood ambassador role in pressuring Elizabeth G Oyer.
- Elizabeth G Oyer criticized DOJ for prioritizing political loyalty over public safety concerns.
Elizabeth G. Oyer, who previously worked as a pardon attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice, asserts that she was dismissed after resisting pressure to reinstate actor Mel Gibson’s gun rights.
Mel Gibson lost the right to own firearms due to a 2011 domestic violence conviction related to his former girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva. Oyer was involved in a team reviewing candidates who might qualify for the restoration of firearm rights.
Oyer claims that Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche’s office reduced a list of 95 candidates down to nine but later directed her to include Gibson’s name. She pushed back, believing that allowing individuals with a history of domestic violence to regain gun rights could lead to serious repercussions.
According to Oyer, her refusal prompted increased pressure from higher-ups in Blanche’s office, who pointed to Gibson’s ties to former President Donald Trump and his recent role as a “special ambassador” to Hollywood. Officials allegedly argued that restoring Gibson’s gun rights would be politically beneficial.
Despite this mounting pressure, Oyer remained resolute and wouldn’t change her recommendation. She contends that she received a termination letter soon after, but no clear reason was given for her firing. In her statement, Oyer took aim at the Justice Department, accusing it of valuing political connections over sound judgment and public safety.
A DOJ official, who chose to remain anonymous, countered Oyer’s allegations, claiming that her dismissal had nothing to do with the Gibson situation. Nonetheless, Gibson’s attorney had earlier reached out to DOJ officials regarding his rights restoration, highlighting his inability to buy firearms due to his conviction.
This controversy has ignited discussions about how the Justice Department makes decisions and manages politically sensitive cases, particularly those involving prominent figures like Gibson.
