- Elon Musk Blames X Outages on Cyberattack Claims a Country May Be Behind It, He said there was a massive cyberattack against X platform.
- Musk claimed the cyberattack was done with a lot resources.
- The platform X faced significant disruptions earlier on Monday.
Elon Musk, who owns X, claimed on Monday that the social media platform was hit by a “massive cyberattack” after outages left many users unable to access it.
He wrote in a post,
“There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X,”
adding that
“We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources,”
and implied that
“either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved.”
In a chat with Fox Business, Musk pointed out that the computer systems connected to the attack seemed to have IP addresses tracing back to Ukraine, though he didn’t provide any proof to back this statement. Cybersecurity experts warned that this doesn’t necessarily mean the attack came from Ukraine.
Downdetector.com, a site that tracks such issues, noted that nearly 40,000 users reported problems with X around 10 a.m. Eastern Time (2 p.m. UTC) on Monday, at the height of the outage. The numbers varied, dropping significantly before rising again to about 35,000 around noon, and then falling once more. Since Musk took over the platform in 2022, X, formerly Twitter, has faced a number of glitches.
According to Downdetector, users started experiencing issues around 6 a.m. ET, with about 20,538 reporting problems. Things seemed to get better for a bit, but nearly 40,000 users were back to facing difficulties by 10 a.m. Reports of outages began to lessen around 2 p.m. ET and continued to drop through the afternoon.
Many users found the platform to be unresponsive, and the outage appeared to be widespread, as shown by various reports on DowDetector’s regional sites. During the Fox Business segment aired at 4 p.m. ET, Musk mentioned that the platform was up and running again.
