The Atlanta Preservation Center’s “Phoenix Flies: A Celebration of Atlanta’s Historic Sites” begins March 3 and will include more than 150 free events showcasing the city’s historic buildings, landscapes and neighborhoods.
Phoenix Flies was created by the preservation center in 2003 to honor the rescue of the Fox Theatre, which now offers grants to help preserve other historic theaters.
Since then, the annual event offers free tours, talks and behind-the-scene experiences of the city’s historic and cultural landmarks. The Atlanta Preservation Center, working with 102 partners, wants to highlight the importance of preservation and community in protecting the city’s built heritage, according to Executive Director David Y. Mitchell.
Some of this year’s events are a tour the Hotel Clermont on March 6; a tour of the West End neighborhood on March 8; a construction tour of 25-27 Auburn Ave. at Georgia State on March 8; and a walking tour of Oglethorpe University in Brookhaven on March 12.
Other events include a walking tour with actors portraying the lives of significant women buried at South-View Cemetery on March 15; a tour of the Georgia State Capitol on March 21; a special look at the hidden details and unknown backstories of the Battle of Atlanta Cyclorama on March 22, and celebrating LGBTQ+ people and places on March 29.
