Once Pakistan acquired the required license from its atomic energy regulating body, it would shortly start building its biggest nuclear power plant.
The largest nuclear energy generating plant in Pakistan, the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit 5 (C-5) has a capacity of 1,200 megawatts electric (MWe), according to the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA), who has licensed it.
The PNRA verified that earlier this year the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) had applied for the license, providing documentation covering nuclear safety, radiation protection, emergency readiness, waste management, and nuclear security together with a Preliminary Safety Assessment Report.
The plant uses a double-shell containment construction and a reactor-filtered venting system among active and passive safety measures.
Third nuclear power station in Pakistan with this sophisticated architecture is C-5, with a 60-year lifetime. Already running and adding to the national grid are similar-specification Karachi Nuclear Power Plants units 2 and 3.
Approved by the National Economic Council’s executive committee, C-5 is expected to cost $3.7 billion and Once running, the facility will increase Pakistan’s nuclear energy capacity—which at present accounts for roughly 27 percent of the nation’s overall electricity generation—from about 3,530 MW.
