The Hammonds House Museum has announced its debut 2025 exhibition, the “Sacred Space: Brandywine Workshop & Archive,” which will feature printmaking works. The works in this exhibition highlight how the art of printmaking alchemizes art, technique, and opportunities for collaboration.
“Brandywine Workshop and Archives (BWA) has been a sacred space since 1972, a place where artists and master printers collaborate to transform ideas into works of art that embody voice, color, shadow, and resilience,” said Michele Parchment, Executive Director of BWA.
The Brandywine Workshop & Archive was founded in 1972 as the Brandywine Graphic Workshop in the Spring Garden neighborhood of North Philadelphia. Initially set forth as a collective of artists and art teachers, the organization has now grown to encompass a permanent collection of artwork, solo and group exhibitions, visiting artist residencies, a national network of satellite collections, and the launch of an online visual arts resource.
“This exhibition, originally conceived at the Fairfield University Museum, has been reimagined and expanded at the Hammonds House Museum, much like a collaborative printmaking process where layers of creativity and vision are built upon to create something entirely new and dynamic,” said Halima Taha, Hammonds House Museum Artistic Chair. Viewers will have the opportunity to consider the ways in which artistic practices can pass down wisdom, techniques, and memory from generation to generation.
“While the Brandywine Workshop and Archives embraces global influences, this exhibition focuses primarily on American artists of African, Afro-Latino, and Indigenous descent. Here, in this historic West End home, the legacy of BWA intertwines with the cultural mosaic of the South, creating a unique dialogue between past and present.”
