Sandy Springs will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 20, with a family-friendly, free event featuring an educational film and children’s activity stations.
The “Martin Luther King, Jr.: Life & Legacy” event begins at 1 p.m. with opening remarks. Activities will be held in the Performing Arts Center’s Studio and Byers Theatres at 1 Galambos Way. The event ends at 4 p.m.
Two screenings of “Our Friend, Martin,” will be shown in Byers Theatre, the first at 1:15 p.m. and the second screening at 2:30 p.m. The animated children’s educational film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights movement follows two middle school friends who travel through time, meeting King at several points during his life. The film features an all-star voice cast and was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program. This film refers to historical events that might require explanations for younger audiences.

Seven activity stations will be set up in the Studio Theatre:
- Dream: Listen to King’s “I Have a Dream” speech and create a “Dream Cloud” craft.
- Justice: Decorate a bookmark with a quote from King, such as “The time is always right to do what is right.”
- Love: Use crayons to trace hands, identifying the similarities everyone shares.
- Liberty: Complete a word search & learn about terms such as civil rights, segregation, and equality.
- Equality: Live story time, with readings of picture books such as “My Brother Martin,” written by King’s sister, Christine King Farris.
- Freedom: Movie screening of the Emmy Award-nominated film, “Our Friend, Martin” (in Byers Theatre).
- Community: This new event lets attendees help create a mural with their neighbors.
This event is free and open to the community. Parking in the City Springs underground deck is complimentary.
Strollers are not allowed inside the Studio Theatre. Stroller parking will be available.
CityBar & Cafe will offer a kid-friendly menu, with a variety of options available for purchase.
