President Donald Trump reacted on Tuesday to the steep decline in Tesla’s stock prices by transforming the White House into an impromptu showroom.
He announced his plan to buy one of the electric vehicles made by his close friend and advisor, Elon Musk, and warned anti-Tesla protesters that they could face serious consequences.
This unusual endorsement from a sitting president for a company backed by his major donor comes in the wake of Tesla shares plummeting due to market concerns intensified by Trump’s tariffs and Musk’s controversial decisions affecting the US government.
“I told Elon, ‘You know, I really don’t like what’s going on for you, but Tesla’s a fantastic company,’”
Trump commented to reporters while standing next to Musk in front of a bright red Tesla on the White House’s south portico.
“He’s never asked for anything from me, and he’s built an amazing company—he shouldn’t be punished just because he’s a patriot,”
Trump added.
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has given Musk the green light to cut federal spending and reduce staff, as the head of what’s dubbed the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
However, DOGE’s high-profile cost-cutting efforts have met with growing pushback, including protests, legal challenges, and pressure from lawmakers.
This chaos has also negatively affected the Tesla brand, with sales dropping significantly in Europe, stock values crashing, and numerous reports of car vandalism.
Trump issued a stern warning about potential crackdowns on protesters.
When a reporter asked if those protesters should be deemed “domestic terrorists,” Trump replied, “I’ll make it happen.”
“You go after Tesla or any company like that, and you’re going to be caught—you’ll go through hell,”
he warned.
Earlier that day, Trump had announced on his Truth Social platform that he planned to buy a Tesla in a show of support for Musk, promoting the cars to his followers.
